Understanding Pregnancy and Iron

Pregnancy and iron may team up if recommended by your health care practitioner. You may be advised to take an iron supplement and eat foods that are extra high in iron. Make sure you discuss this with your health care practitioner, don’t make that decision on your own.

• The best way to absorb an iron supplement is to take it between meals with a light snack.

• If taken on an empty stomach an iron supplement may cause nausea.

• Try to take an iron supplement with foods high in vitamin c, these would include berries, citrus fruits, peppers, broccoli, or tomatoes.

• Do not take an iron supplement with tea or coffee, and do not take it with foods that are high in calcium or with your calcium supplements.

• Keep in mine that an iron supplement may cause constipation

Below will explain why you may need an iron supplement:

• When you’re pregnant, the amount of blood in your body increases until you have almost 50 percent more blood than usual, so you need more iron to make more hemoglobin.
• You need extra iron for your growing baby and placenta, especially in the second and third trimester.
• Many women need more because they start their pregnancy with insufficient stores of iron.
