There are some people who wonder whether knee surgery is actually effective in giving them a life free from knee pain. People are sometimes not sure whether surgery is the right knee pain treatment for them or not. Knee pain can be intolerable and quite often the only way to get knee pain relief permanently, is by having knee surgery. Knee surgery has helped people all over the world who are now living a life free from chronic knee pain. Hundreds of thousands of people all over the world undergo knee surgery every year; about ninety percent of these people feel that their life has improved after surgery. They can now move normally without feeling any pain or suffer from knee pain caused by the swelling they previously encountered.

Some people can care for their pain with medications and a properly designed exercise program. Many other people have tried these techniques of treatment with little or no success. The only option that is left to them is to have surgery. Living with a painful knee can be very difficult and life style altering. If your condition is severe then you will probably find it exceedingly difficult to perform your daily chores and activities. Some people have such extreme pain that they are unable to dress themselves with out feeling pain in their injured knee. If your situation is this serious then you really should talk to a Doctor about the possibility of having knee surgery.

The first time you visit a Doctor he will examine your knee and probably send you for an MRI. Based on the results of the MRI the option of having surgery will be diagnosed. If he does recommend surgery then you will have to follow procedures to prepare for the surgery which will include a physical examination. Everything will be explained to you in preparation for knee surgery by your surgeon and his staff.

Unfortunately there may come a day when you will feel extremely helpless. You will no longer be able to carry out your regular activities as you once did. Doctors will only advise you to have knee surgery when they feel that it is the best solution to help manage your pain. Depending on what type of knee surgery you are having, you will be able to resume your normal daily activities possibly with some restrictions after you have undergone surgery and proper rehabilitation.

Total Knee Replacement Surgery

January 24th, 2011 No comments

When you go visit a doctor, he will first advise you to take certain medications (before even mentioning total knee replacement surgery). He may also recommend walking supports. If none of the above mentioned suggestions work, then you may be asked to consider getting total knee replacement surgery done. You must be aware how difficult it is for you to carry out your day to day chores or activities if your knee is giving you pain. In severe cases, some people feel pain even when they are lying on their bed or sitting in a comfortable chair.

What is total knee replacement?

It is a surgical procedure that is performed on the elderly people (and middle-aged people) to treat their knee pain. While we tend to ignore the importance of our knee most of our lives, we can not ignore the fact that our knee is extremely vital because if our knee is not functioning properly then it will not be easy for us to move or walk about the way that we used to.

After your doctor recommends total knee replacement surgery to you, you should sit and talk to your loved ones about it because this is a big decision and you need to know what your family members think about it. When you decide that you will undergo this surgical procedure, your doctor will recommend a good orthopedic surgeon who will perform the total knee replacement surgery for you.

With total knee replacement surgery, you will no longer have to sit at home all the time and depend on someone else to get your daily chores done. Moreover, it will be easy for you to move from one location to another with much easy and comfort. You will no longer have to suffer from painful knee. It has been found that most of the patients who undergo the total knee replacement surgery fall under the age group of sixty to eighty years old. However, there are also cases where the patients are younger.

There are many people who are not even fifty five years of age, who suffer from severe knee pain. They are unable to perform their daily activities or chores by themselves. The pain makes them dependent on others, helping in the decision for total knee replacement surgery. If you are younger and suffer from serious knee pain, maybe you should consider undergoing this surgical. Make sure you go to a good, experienced knee replacement surgeon.

Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

January 18th, 2011 No comments

One of the most common types of surgery is the arthroscopic knee surgery. Torn cartilage that is located within the knee is taken out through this surgical procedure. A few small incisions are made on the skin in order to carry out arthroscopic knee surgery. This procedure is conducted with the help of an arthroscopic. Even though this surgery does not involve making a big incision on the skin, an arthroscopic knee surgery can not be treated as a casual one. The doctor will have to find out the cause of the knee pain or injury before he recommends this surgery to his patient.

Basically, arthroscopic knee surgery is one where a small camera is used to see the inside of the joint. This camera is inserted into the knee through the small incision that is made. The surgeon will then make one or maybe a few more incisions to get rid of the torn cartilage from the joint. After the surgery, the incisions will be covered with a bandage for a few days to help keep the incisions germ-free.

The cartilage that has been damaged will be removed by the use of small scissors, shavers and other tiny instruments. The surgeon will be able to get a better look of the joint with the help of the arthroscopic and through this way; he will be able to spot the problems that are inside the knee.

While this is just like any other form of surgery, it does not cause much pain to the patient who is undergoing this procedure. During the surgery, you can expect the presence of an anesthesiologist. He will ask you whether or not you are comfortable through the whole procedure and if you feel that you are not comfortable then you can always say that to the anesthesiologist.

After the surgery has been performed, you will have to take certain medication(s) to reduce the discomfort from the surgery. Of course, it will help you a lot if you use an ice pack on that region. You will also benefit by elevating your knee. Usually, people who undergo the arthroscopic knee surgery are able to resume their normal activities in no time. On the other hand, there are also some people who prefer to take a week off and relax to recuperate from the arthroscopic knee surgery.

Your Doctor and therapist will explain what is expected of you during the recovery stage.

Knee Surgery For Your Meniscus

October 1st, 2010 No comments

If you are facing meniscus knee surgery let me explain what the meniscus is. The meniscus is a cartilage that is the shape of a half moon. It is located between the lower leg bone and the upper leg bone. The main purpose of this cartilage is to assist the knee when bending and moving. If the meniscus is damaged or diseased then you may have to consider meniscus knee surgery. If the meniscus is injured or damaged then it will not be easy for a person to walk or move about properly. As long as the meniscus is in good health, your knee is in good health.

Now the question is: Should you opt for meniscus knee surgery?

The answer is yes if you are unable to do your regular day to day activities like you used to. Depending on someone else to get your daily activities or chores will definitely not make a person feel comfortable. However, if your knee is not in good condition then you will have no choice but to depend on others for help. On the other hand, thanks to meniscus knee surgery, you can now get your knee back in good form.

As soon as you sport these symptoms, you should go and visit a doctor immediately:

1. Difficulty or inability to stand properly on the leg that has been infected or affected.

2. Inability to move about like you used to.

3. Pain in your knees

4. When you find that your knee has swollen up.

Meniscus knee surgery is performed with the help of a small camera. This is the camera that is used by surgeons to look inside the joint and perform the surgery. The surgeon will not make a big incision on your knee to get the surgery done. The surgeon can very perform the meniscus knee surgery by making small incisions. Usually, patients are allowed to go home on the same day that they undergo surgery.
