Exercising a Shoulder With Bursitis

The condition of shoulder bursitis always involve pain. It is often related to shoulder tendonitis which manifests similar symptoms. Shoulder bursitis is also called impingement syndrome as it also impinge the rotator cuff muscles resulting to its inflammation.I’m going to focus on bursitis in this article but many of the same ideas can be applied if you have frozen shoulder or a similar condition.

The bursa and the inserted tendons in the shoulder joint may be compressed that cause shoulder bursitis. Painful shoulder may result once there is a thickening of the tendons and bursa on the shoulder.

The initial reaction would be inflammatory response that may be caused by injury to the bursa and tendons. The affected structures then thicken that impinges the tissues eliciting the symptoms of pain. The pain occurs with intense pain at night and overhead movement of the shoulder can further increase the pain.

Shoulder rehabilitation helps in relieving the symptoms of shoulder bursitis. The following exercises will help strengthen and rehabilitate the shoulder after the pain subsides:

You can gently lean your back to the wall and the slowly squeeze your shoulder blade backward to the wall. For 5 seconds hold the position in place. Wand exercise may also be performed. To flex your shoulder, you can stand upright holding a stick in both hands with palms down. Lift your hand over your head while maintaining a straight elbow. Hold the position for 5 seconds and you can repeat the same procedure for 10 times. To perform the extension shoulder wand exercise, assume the same initial position then bring the arms backward.

You can lean on the back from the wall then shrug the shoulder, holding it for 5 seconds. For 5 seconds hold the shoulder blades in a position as if you are squeezing them together. Next you pull down the shoulder in a way like you are reaching down for your pocket.

These exercises are useful in the management of a painful shoulder with bursitis. Shoulder exercise is a part of the shoulder treatment protocol that can help strengthen the shoulder joint’s surrounding tissues, maintain the shoulder joint mobility and prevent further pain and limited range of motion of the shoulder due to bursitis.

Understanding Joint Pain Relief

July 13th, 2011 No comments

This article is about the underlying causes and joint pain relief.  Receiving chronic pain relief through the use of vitamins and exercise is also mentioned. This information will be very valuable to anyone who requires knee pain relief or knee pain treatment.

Joint pain is commonly misconstrued as an ailment. Actually, it is the effect of several kinds of ailments, disorders or injuries. As it can be a very vexing condition, it is quite important to know the underlying illnesses or causes that lead to joint pain.

Joint pain can be instigated by Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). RA by being classified as an autoimmune disease means the body mistakes its own tissues as an unfamiliar substance. In doing this, the lining of the joints become agitated thereby excreting excessive fluids that can cause joint pains in wrists, knees, elbows, fingers, toes, ankle and neck. The cause of rheumatoid arthritis is still undetermined but infections, heredity and hormones are some of its considerations.

Another disorder that brings about joint pain in individuals is Osteoarthritis. This ailment is usually related with old age since the cartilages in between ball and socket joints are already in a state of erosion. As a result, these joints tend to rub each other while un-cushioned, hence resulting in joint pain. In its worst condition, joint pain is aggravated by bony spikes that form as a result of un-cushioned rubbing.

Fluid-filled sacs called bursas are found near joints where tendons or muscles cross over bony protrusions. Due to overwork or as an off-shoot of rheumatoid arthritis, gout or infections, these bursas become inflamed. Swollen bursas are the indications of the ailment called bursitis. As a result, ball and socket joint movements affect the inflamed bursa and sets-off joint pain in the shoulders, knees, elbows and hips.

An example of an illness caused by infection which results in joint pain is septic arthritis. It is a condition wherein organisms classified as streptococcus or staphylococcus reaches the bloodstream and infects the joints. Unlike the afore-mentioned disorders, septic arthritis may occur at any age and usually produces joint pain in the knees and hips. There are a numerous ways to deal with joint pain.  To avoid bone related diseases that result in joint pain, a sufficient supply of vitamin D in the body is most helpful. A medically suggested method of promoting vitamin D production within the body system is by having adequate exposure to the sun’s healthful rays. In cases of osteoarthritis not related to the event of old age obesity usually causes the early erosion of cartilages. Thus, weight reduction can avert arthritic conditions that lead to aching joints.

Other remedies may involve the use of an exercise ball to help socket joint movements and muscle strengthening. Light work outs in a pool, gym or yoga are often suggested as effective treatments. Organic based products advertised online such as “Flex Protex” or glucosamine are recommended for relief of easing joint aches. Eventually everyone will deal with the reality of joint pain and dealing with it can be accomplished by knowing its relief.

Make sure you consult with your Doctor with regards to the use of vitamins and before you begin any kind of physical exercise.

Arthritis – Not Just For The Senior Citizens

There’s a general misconception that arthritis is an age-related health problem that troubles only the senior citizens or the elderly. It could be true with osteoarthritis, the most common type of joint disorder that usually is affecting adults of both sexes in their middle age. But what the majority don’t get is that there are more types or causes of arthritis. There are many considerations when seeking  arthritis remedies.

Arthritis, a. K. A joint soreness, is defined as an inflammation of one or more joints and involves the breakdown of cartilage leading to discomfort, swelling, and limited movement.

Cartilage is responsible for defending the joints and serves as a surprise absorber when pressure is placed on the joint during walking or running. It allows for the smooth movement of our limbs. Without cartilage, the bones will rub together and may cause pain, swelling ( inflammation ), and rigidity. Doctors generally prescribe  arthritis pain relief and anti-inflammatory drugs to help lessen the agony.

Arthritis, or joint swelling, can be due to the following causes:
broken Bones;
Infections that are sometimes caused by bacteria or viruses;
An autoimmune disease ( the body attacks itself because the immune system believes a body part is foreign ) ; and
General ‘wear and tear’ on joints.

Generally, as fast as the injury heals, the swelling disappears. The infection is treated and the illness is cured. However, there are some wounds or injuries wherein the inflammation remains stubbornly and steadily causing pain that may light the way to bigger problems. This condition is known as persistent arthritis.

People suffering from arthritis will experience the following symptoms:
Joint pain
Joint swelling
rigidity, particularly in the morning
heat around a joint
Redness of the skin around a joint
Reduced capability to move the joint

Arthritis is a condition that may occur in men and women of every age. Other kinds of arthritis include:
Rheumatoid arthritis ( in adults )
Osteoarthritis ( middle age and above )
Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis ( in children )
Systemic lupus erythematosus ( SLE )
Gout
Scleroderma
Psoriatic arthritis
Ankylosing spondylitis
Reiter’s syndrome ( reactive arthritis )
Adult Still’s disease
Viral arthritis
Gonococcal arthritis
Other bacterial infections ( non-gonococcal bacterial arthritis )
Tertiary Lyme disease ( the late stage )
Tuberculouus arthritis
Fungal infections such as blastomycosis

Osteoarthritis, being the most common type, is a chronic illness which causes the cartilage between the bone joints to get worse and may cause painful sensation and/or stiffness. New pieces of bones, called bone spurs, may grow round the joints as a consequence of osteoarthritis. Until now, there’s no known reason yet as to the root of osteoarthritis but it is in general being associated with aging. However, factors like metabolism and genes can play a part in its development.

There are many factors to consider before your physician can prescribe arthritis pain relief treatment plan such as the particular cause of arthritis, affected joints, severity of arthritis, and how the condition affects your daily activities. Age and occupation will also be considered.

Eliminating the underlying cause of the arthritis is one of the goals for treating arthritis. However, not all cause are treatable like in the cases of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Reducing pain and discomfort as well as prevention from further damage becomes the focus.

Lifestyle changes and exercise can significantly help in improving the condition of those afflicted with arthritis. Medications like arthritis pain relief and anti-inflammatory drugs can be taken in addition to exercise and lifestyle changes.

There are Ways to Stop Grinding Your Teeth

It’s not surprising if you’re on the lookout for solutions to stop grinding your teeth. Studies show that about twenty percent of adults suffer from bruxism at night. This figure doesn’t even take into account the teens and children who have the problem too as well as the many others who have to deal with it in the morning. If you are one of the many sufferers, it’s time you chose a solution to help stop the condition.

Progressive Relaxation

One suspected cause of bruxism is stress. Under stressful conditions, the jaw muscles start to grow tense and clenching begins. You can help yourself deal with both stress and muscle tension through progressive muscle relaxation. This is a procedure in which an individual who suffers from the constant grinding of teeth imagines and practices gradually loosening the muscles. You can start off by clenching and unclenching your jaws until you are able to come to a point where unclenching or jaw relaxation occurs for a longer period of time. If you feel that your entire body is tense, you can perform this method for your whole body including your jaw muscles. This is such a simple technique that you can do this while sitting at your work station or performing a routine work task.

Therapy Sessions

Stress and anxiety may have deeper roots than the usual issues at work or in the family. In these instances, grinding your teeth may only be one of the many health consequences. In these instances therapy sessions may help. The logic is that, dealing with the root psychological cause can resolve all other issues including bruxism.

Relaxing Activities

In a lot of cases, there is no need to pay a therapist. You might really be having problems because of terrible habits such as too much coffee intake, watching too much evening television and working late at night. The best solution is to replace these bad habits with good ones. You can start drinking warm milk, listening to calming music, and enjoying a bubble bath before sleeping. All these can help you stop grinding teeth and can get rid of insomnia.

Teeth Realignment

Misaligned teeth might also be responsible for the habit of grinding. People who have badly aligned teeth tend to grind more because they want to find a better bite. Your dentist Melbourne expert might have a couple of good suggestions to whip your teeth in line. Ask if you can have braces installed or if your teeth can be filed in some spots.

Grind Guards

One popular solution that you may want to try is a teeth grinding guard. These are plastic or rubber units that are molded and fitted over an individual’s actual set of teeth. These protect against wearing and damage by preventing enamel contact. There are different types of guards. These can be bought over the counter or they can be custom made. They can also be double wall or single wall, night wear or day wear and made of plastic or rubber. Your choice should depend on such factors as quality, durability and comfort.

You can stop grinding your teeth. All that you really need to do is to find which solution fits you best. Don’t let this problem ruin your oral assets or cause more distress.
