Absence Seizures – A Different Kind Of Seizure

Otherwise known as petit mal, absence seizure often appears like a brief lapse in conscious activity. During an episode, the person experiencing the seizure seems like staring into space for a few seconds.

Frequency

Absence seizure occurs most commonly among children although teenage and adult patients may also exhibit symptoms associated with this condition. In general, however, this seizure is age-related. Children are most susceptible to electrical discharges in the brain because there are more synapses or gaps between nerve cells in developing brains. This explains the fact that children tend to outgrow this condition once they reach the stage when their brains become fully developed.

Onset usually begins early, during the prenatal, perinatal or postnatal stages, and is predominantly experienced by children age 4 to 8 years old, with symptoms peaking at ages 6 to 7. Symptoms, however, rarely appear before age 1.

In the United States, absence seizure occurs in around 2 in every 100,000 people.

Signs and Symptoms

Absence seizure is relatively shorter than advance cases of seizures like tonic-clonic seizure. This only lasts for a few seconds and is not accompanied with violent convulsions typically associated with epileptic seizures, although twitching movements of the muscles of the eyes are quite common.

Common symptoms of absence seizure include staring into space without any unusual movements which may appear like the patient is presently ‘disconnected’, smacking of the lips, chewing motions, fluttering of the eyelids, small hand movements.

Some attacks of absence seizures can be so brief, they are barely noticeable. These types, which are often perceived as daydreaming, can happen several times in a day to up to a hundred times, depending on the severity of the condition. There are also attacks that can last for up to several seconds.

The hallmark of an absence seizure is the loss of consciousness. As such, patients normally do not have any memory of the seizure and are most likely to go back where they have left off prior to the attack of seizure. A few of them may feel confused after recovering but most exhibit no unusual behavior.

Absence seizure is comparably less dangerous and violent than more severe cases of seizure. However, this still poses risks to their safety. A more significant effect of the condition to the patient is a significant decline in performance. Children with this condition often perform poorly at school because of their lapses in concentration.

Causes

Most absence seizures are idiopathic, meaning there is no identifiable cause to their occurrence. It is clear in clinical studies, though, that children with this condition have family history of epilepsy. The majority of these children have genetic predisposition to develop abnormalities in the electrical activities of the brain.

Hyperventilation is one of the few known triggers of absence seizure. Altered levels of neurotransmitters, a chemical in the brain that facilitates communication between neurons, are also known to kick in the symptoms of this condition.

Complications

Although it is possible to outgrow absence seizure, there are patients who continue to exhibit symptoms well into adulthood. In not a few cases, the symptoms develop into tonic-clinic seizures and other more severe types of seizure.

Amniocentesis: A Prenatal DNA Paternity Testing

Aside from the traditional blood sample, there are several methods using various sampling now available in profiling DNA for paternity identification.

One of these advanced systems is called amniocentesis. It is also known as amniotic fluid test or AFT. Originally, amniocentesis is a prenatal procedure to diagnose the chromosomal abnormalities and fetal infections.

The amniocentesis is performed in the second trimester or during the 14th to 20th weeks of pregnancy. In this procedure, the OB-GYN uses ultrasound to guide a thin needle into the uterus passing through the abdominal wall then finally into the amnion or amniotic sac. Before the procedure starts, local anesthetic is provided to the pregnant woman in order to relieve the pain felt when the insertion of needle happens.

The needle draws out a sufficient amount of amniotic fluid. This is about 20ml. This fluid is extracted from the amnion sac that surrounds the fetus. The fluid contains fetal tissues. After the extraction of amniotic fluid, the fetal cells shall be separated from the sample. It will be grown in a culture medium, fixed, and then stained. After the procedure, the puncture heals and the amniotic sac replenishes the liquid within 24 to 48 hours.

This procedure is usually performed in the hospital. Then it will be collected by laboratories for testing. Generally, results are available within three to five working days.

Aside from paternity DNA testing and as mentioned above, this procedure is used to examine the child for possible abnormalities such as anencephaly, Down syndrome, Edward syndrome, and Tunner syndrome, Trisomy 13 and 18, inherited metabolic disorders, infection, Rh incompatibility, and spina bifida.

Amniocentesis poses risks to pregnancy. Undergoing this procedure will have a small chance of serious complications such as harming the baby and miscarriage. Way back in the 1970s, studies showed that amniocentesis causes miscarriage at a rate of 1 in 200, or barely half of one percent. Three decades after, studies found out that there is lesser amniocentesis-related miscarriage – only about 1 in 1,600 cases or about .6 percent.

This procedure might also cause injury to the child’s limbs. Other adverse effects may also be cramping, leaking of amniotic fluid, and vaginal bleeding. Yet, records show that about six percent of pregnant women consider undergoing the amniocentesis procedure. In addition, about 7% of women who undergo this text have not felt any discomfort.

Other possible complications may include infection of the amniotic sac from the needle. In addition, there is a possibility that the puncture will not heal properly that can result to leakage or infection of the amniotic sac. It may also cause preterm labor and delivery, postural deformities, respiratory distress, and fetal trauma.

Meanwhile, experts are also amniotic fluid as possible source of several kinds of stem cells. One of the possible benefits of amniotic stem cells is that it avoids ethical concerns among pro-life advocates. Today, there is one active amniotic stem cell in the United States.

It should be noted that pregnant women who wants to undergo such procedure for paternity DNA testing would need a doctor’s consent.

7 Running Regulations To Learn By Heart

Everything in life involves dealing with so many regulations, even when running. Despite runners strictly adhering to the rules and regulations that come with this strenuous, yet enjoyable and fulfilling activity, everything will still zero in on doing your own thing.

1. Do What Suits You

Running is supposed to be a sport or activity characterized by freedom. You see, there are no hard-knock rules in running. You may simply stride off when you run, overrunning all your co-runners; or simply take things slow setting your own space and pace; or better yet a combination of both by doing stops at certain point of the road. Bottom line is, a runner can do his own thing when running.

2. Focus On Targeting A Place

Running can be so exhausting, yes. But if there is one thing to keep you running despite the exhaustion and thirst; or the muscle cramps and leg pains, it is the achievements that you might reap in running. Almost all fun runs or marathon races have crowded starting lines so you can just imagine the competition and that gives you an idea of how you will more or less fare in the event. The important thing is to aim for a place. That way, you will not only excel in this sport you chose, but you will develop a sense of being goal-driven as well.

3. Distractions While Running

Sometimes, what runners do is chat to push them into finishing the run. Getting a good exercise is already enough for them, so they just chat their last few laps back into the finish line with their time ran extremely far from the ideal. This can sometimes be distracting to other runners.

Among other things that could distract a runner are somebody else’s dangling keys, very loud music from their I-pods and the beeps of a heart monitor device. If you do not want any of these noise, then just simply overrun them and lead the run.

4. No Pets While Running

Pets are meant to be walked, they are not meant to be running companions especially when it is a race or a fun run event. It is in fact discouraged by event organizers to bring along your dogs to races, because chances are if they are not leashed properly, they would block the way of the other runners and might even give them a trip or two.

5. Take Extra Cautions

Yes, there are several aid stations located on both sides of the road; however, it would be best to have an extra ounce of prevention to avoid possible accidents and injuries while running. It does not help that just because there are aid stations around, you are free to inflict injury on yourself as you run. Be careful at all times.

6. No Room For Whining

Sometimes there are runners who, in extreme exhaustion, will whine while running towards the finish line. Isn’t it just irritating to hear them? They whine about how this running is tearing his knees; or how after the event, he will shift to biking instead, and several other whines. Please, be a runner not a whiner.

7. Just Run All The Way To The Finish Line

While to many, headphones and loud chatting are truly annoying, to others they are nothing. There are some people who do not even care if someone talks so loudly and then overruns her. Competition is not just their cup of tea. For them, running is about finishing off with what you began, and not necessarily the first one to finish. Whatever holds true to you, just slip away to the finish line as fast as you can!
